Company Highlights
Alaka’i Consulting & Engineering, Inc. and its extensive network of affiliated partners
provide next generation sensor and technology solutions to challenges facing the
Defense and Security market place. This Team can bring all the science and
engineering disciplines together with the relevant operational experience to get the
job done. Within this breadth of experience, we have a particular specialty in laser
and electro-optic remote sensing and systems integration to detect trace molecules
of military significance, such as found in explosives and Improvised Explosive
Devices (IED).
Our key application areas are protection of vehicles, light infantry, and key
infrastructure from explosives & IEDs used by insurgents and terrorists. In the new
year we anticipate investigating Maritime applications for our technologies.
Our Consulting group directly supports our core R&D business by establishing close relationships with Universities. As former graduate students, faculty, and researchers, we understand them and their needs. We assist them in project management, technology transition, and how to optimize their research thrusts to generate maximum value for their DoD sponsors. This tends to develop ‘repeat business’ for our client Universities, who then secure stable long term sponsors.
We currently are either development partners with or consultants for the University of South Florida (USF), Florida A&M University (FAMU), University of Hawaii (UH), Arkansas State University (ASU) and the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point.
Headquartered along with our lab in the Young-Rainey Science, Technology and Research (STAR) Technology Enterprise Center (TEC) in the Tampa Bay area, Florida, we also maintain a presence in the Pacific (Hawaii), Northeast (New Hampshire), and Washington, D.C.
Who We Are
Alaka`i is a high technology Small Business engaged in research and development,
engineering, consulting in many domains, applied physics, and technology
transition. We work principally, though not exclusively, for military services and their
contractors. Alaka’i is a DoD Prime Contractor. For Department of Defense
contracting preference categories, we are a Small Business, Service-Disabled
Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOBC) Concern, Veteran-Owned Small
Business (VOSB), and a minority owned business. We are awaiting results of our
application for Small Disadvantage Business (SDB) and entry into the 8(a) Program. We are also a Native Hawaiian owned business, which provides unique Prime Contractor financial advantages when they subcontract to Native Hawaiian, Native Alaskan, and Native American owned companies. The Principals are West Point graduates who met
while on the faculty of the Physics Department of West Point, following a more traditional Army career path in the Infantry, Special Forces, Corps of Engineers, and Army Acquisition Corps. Combined with experience gained from senior Program Management positions in defense firms including Lockheed Martin, the leadership team understands the technologies, the Universities which develop them, the business discipline to turn ideas into products, and most importantly, understands the needs of the Soldier from first hand experience.
What We Do
Our core research and development interests are in standoff detection and remote sensing of trace molecules of military significance, including explosives, Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), and others. While we do participate with our many University Partners in research, our greatest value is in turning their research breakthroughs into useable prototypes and field testable hardware with greater speed, flexibility, and efficiency than our competitors.
How Alaka’i can assist a Prime Contractor
- Develop systems and subsystems within cost, schedule, and performance specifications
- Execute technical and managerial support contracts with superior performance
- Very low burdened rate structure – efficient use of lean resources
- Provide 5% fee incentive award for subcontracts under a FAR incentive program
- Strong military contracting experience
- Strategic Planning, Marketing and Contract Capture support
= Network of technical subject matter expert consultants and former military professionals
Meet multiple socioeconomic goals (Native Hawaiian, SDVOSBC, and soon SDB & 8a) of the program’s subcontracting plan with just one subcontractor.
